Meet the Owners

The Wright family’s connection to Uganda spans four generations, and their roots in the country run deep. What began in 1997 with a single lodge has grown into Wildplaces Africa and The Uganda Safari Company, founded by Jonathan Wright. Born in Jinja, Johnny spoke Swahili before he spoke English and grew up with a strong sense of belonging to Uganda’s landscapes and people.

Pamela was born in Canada and raised in Japan before studying in the United States. Her journey eventually led her to Uganda, where she and Johnny built both a family and a shared vision for meaningful, conservation driven tourism.

Today they live off grid outside Kampala with their children, Annabelle and James, who continue the family legacy. Wildplaces Africa remains a personal, family run endeavour shaped by purpose, pride, and a deep love for Uganda.

Explore & Experience

Wildplaces Africa brings together some of Uganda’s most memorable experiences, each camp opening a different window into the country’s remarkable ecosystems. At Clouds, guests venture into the forests of Nkuringo for one of Africa’s greatest privileges: gorilla trekking. Honey Bear and The River Station offer chimp tracking, relaxed game viewing, and peaceful boat safaris along the Kazinga Channel.

In Semliki, the focus shifts to rare birding, scenic drives, and the chance to see the iconic Shoebill. Papa’s Camp and Kulu Ora provide gentle riverside stays with boat trips to Murchison Falls and wildlife filled plains.

Further north, Apoka reveals the vast drama of Kidepo Valley, with open savannah, sweeping views, and exceptional big game sightings.

WHY WE LOVE IT?

Wildplaces Africa was one of our first partners, and what continues to stand out is the calibre of the places they choose to protect and share. Their camps sit in some of Uganda’s most remote and remarkable landscapes — from the high forests of Nkuringo to the open plains of Murchison and the vast valleys of Kidepo. Each property is firmly rooted in its environment, shaped by a clear commitment to conserving the wildlife and ecosystems that define these regions.

What we value is how these locations are brought to life for guests. Wildlife encounters feel natural, the pace reflects the rhythm of the landscapes, and every stay offers an honest connection to Uganda’s wild spaces.

Accommodation

Wildplaces Africa offers a range of accommodation styles across Uganda’s most beautiful regions. Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge features volcanic stone cottages with fireplaces and wide Virunga views, creating an ideal base for gorilla trekking. Honey Bear Bush Camp is intimate and wild, with five tents set along the Kazinga Channel for close hippo and elephant encounters. The River Station offers elevated rooms with private plunge pools, an infinity pool, and elegant communal spaces.

Semliki Safari Lodge brings classic safari charm with wooden floors, vintage Land Rovers, open lounges, and bathtubs overlooking the valley. Papa’s Camp has five ensuite tents with outdoor showers and Nile views, known for excellent meals and regular lion sightings.

Kulu Ora, opening in 2026, will offer a relaxed riverside retreat, while Apoka Safari Lodge provides canvas walled chalets, a rock hewn pool, a stilted lounge, and outdoor bathtubs with sweeping Kidepo views.

Stay with Purpose

Wildplaces Africa is built on conservation, community, and long term impact. Clouds remains a pioneering example — the first luxury lodge created solely to support gorilla conservation and owned by the local community. Across all their properties, the commitment is clear.

Each lodge contributes to ranger support, including funding for ranger posts, patrol vehicles, and critical wildlife protection work. Local employment and in house training create long term opportunities, while school support, scholarships, and community welfare programmes strengthen neighbouring villages. Eco conscious operations, from solar power to low impact building practices, guide daily decisions.

Through the newly established Wildplaces Conservation Foundation, this impact is set to grow. Every stay plays a role in safeguarding Uganda’s most remarkable landscapes for generations to come.
