Kinondo Kwetu is a barefoot paradise on Kenya’s southern coast, offering a peaceful and personal alternative to the busier stretches of Diani. Set on a private beach bordered by rocky cliffs and sacred forest, it lies within a protected Kaya area, ancestral land of the Kinondo community. Many trees here, including a centuries old baobab, are considered holy.
Kinondo Kwetu feels more like a home than a hotel. For guests arriving from safari, it is a gentle transition to the coast, with warm hospitality, calm spaces, and a team who genuinely care. That care also reaches into the surrounding communities through the Kinondo Kwetu Trust Fund, which supports healthcare and education.
Kinondo Kwetu was founded in 2005 by Swedish couple Ida and Filip Andersson, whose family history traces back to Baron Blixen. They raised their children on site and created Kinondo Kwetu as a place that feels lived in and loved, a family home first and a guest retreat second. That spirit remains at the heart of every stay. Guests are welcomed with the same ease and kindness that have shaped the property since the beginning, and the connection to the local community is an essential part of the story.
Very early on, Ida and Filip saw the need for improved access to healthcare and education in the surrounding villages. In response, they established the Kinondo Kwetu Trust Fund, which continues to support local clinics, schools, and community development initiatives in partnership with the people who call this coastline home.
Set on a beautiful stretch of coastline, Kinondo Kwetu offers a wide range of land and water based activities for every pace and mood. Snorkel straight from the beach, paddleboard, kayak, or sail a Hobie Cat, or take a traditional dhow to the quiet coves of Paradise Lost. Those seeking more adventure can try water skiing, kite surfing, diving, or deep sea fishing.
On land, guests can enjoy yoga, massages, a wood fired sauna, tennis, gym sessions, horse riding through sacred forest, or even the lodge’s private skatepark. Three pools offer peaceful places to unwind. At Kinondo Kwetu, you set the rhythm, whether active, relaxed, or somewhere in between.
Kinondo Kwetu is one of those places that feels special the moment you arrive. It is not flashy or over designed, and that simplicity is a large part of its charm. The atmosphere is calm, comfortable, and quietly spoiling, with wide sea views and a sense of ease that settles in quickly.
Days follow a gentle rhythm, whether you spend them practising yoga, swimming, walking barefoot along the beach, or enjoying an impromptu sundowner. Nothing feels hurried.
What truly stands out is the warmth of the team. Their intuition, kindness, and deep connection to the community give the lodge its soul. Kinondo Kwetu is a place that stays with you.
Surrounded by tropical gardens and only a few steps from the beach, Kinondo Kwetu’s accommodation offers a sense of barefoot beach luxury that is peaceful, stylish, and thoughtfully designed. The lodge can be booked entirely or in part, giving plenty of flexibility for couples, families, groups, and special occasions.
The main villa, Mama Tina, has two simple and charming rooms suited to solo travellers, teenagers, or those seeking good value. Five stand alone cottages are set throughout the gardens, each with its own outdoor seating area and coastal character, with Cottages 4 and 5 especially good for families.
Mama Taa Villa offers eight rooms, including a honeymoon suite and the spacious Borelius Family Suite, while Alex House is a four bedroom private villa with its own pool and kitchen for guests wanting more independence.
Through the Kinondo Kwetu Trust Fund, the lodge supports a wide range of long term community initiatives. At the heart of this work is the Kinondo Kwetu Hospital, founded in 2008, which now handles more than two hundred thousand patient visits each year and safely delivers over seventeen hundred babies.
The Trust also assists local schools, kindergartens, and a growing scholarship programme, while in house training at the lodge creates long term opportunities for staff. Environmental responsibility guides daily life, with solar power, home grown produce, and support for conservation groups such as the Whale Shark Trust and the Colobus Trust.
Every stay contributes directly to this work, ensuring that tourism continues to benefit the land, the community, and the future of this remarkable coastline.
